Small-leaved lime
Tilia cordata
This tree species, easily one of the most important in Central European flora, has been planted for ages near households as a melliferous plant, Assemblies, court meetings, and dances were held under age-old lindens. They were extolled by poets (Jan Kochanowski, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) and in a song by Franz Schubert.
One of Penderecki’s Songs of Transience sets a text about a lime tree by Joseph von Eichendorff. An old linden alley greets guests entering Lusławice park, and one particularly impressive specimen grows at the gate in front of the manor.
